Bridgeport’s Community Health Assessment Highlights Key Challenges and Priorities

Bridgeport’s recent Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) has shed light on several pressing issues affecting residents’ well-being. The assessment, conducted by the Greater Bridgeport Health Improvement Alliance, combines quantitative data with community input to identify health priorities and guide future initiatives.

Economic Disparities Impacting Health

The CHNA reveals significant economic challenges within Bridgeport. The city’s median household income stands at $56,584, notably lower than the regional average of $76,714. This economic strain correlates with higher rates of poverty, food insecurity, and housing cost burdens. Many households allocate more than 30% of their income to housing, making it difficult to afford other essentials like nutritious food and healthcare.

Mental Health Concerns on the Rise

Mental health has emerged as a critical concern. Data indicates that mental health issues are the leading cause of hospitalization in the region, with 10.4 hospitalizations per 1,000 adults. Additionally, 15% of residents reported needing mental health care but not receiving it, often due to cost or long wait times. The shortage of mental health providers exacerbates this issue, with Fairfield County having 681 residents per provider compared to the statewide ratio of 516 residents per provider.

Housing Challenges Affecting Quality of Life

Housing affordability remains a significant issue. Approximately 31% of renters spend more than 30% of their income on housing, a level considered financially stressful. This financial strain can lead to deferred maintenance and substandard living conditions, impacting residents’ health and safety.

Community Initiatives and Future Priorities

In response to these challenges, the CHNA has outlined three key health priorities for the coming years:

  1. Mental Wellbeing: Improve access to mental health and substance use services.
  2. Preventive Care and Quality of Life: Increase access to primary care, specialty care, and preventive services.
  3. Strengthening Communities: Address social determinants of health such as housing, food access, and economic stability.

These priorities aim to guide the region’s Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) from 2025 to 2028, fostering collaboration among hospitals, public health departments, nonprofits, schools, and residents to build a healthier Bridgeport.
